“Rapid food intake produces more gastroesophageal reflux than eating slowly,” concludes Dr. Stephan M. Wildi, of the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. Millions of people suffer from gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, where acid washes up from the stomach to irritate the esophagus. Without treatment, GERD can contribute to more serious conditions, including, in rare cases, esophageal cancer. Wildi’s team theorized that the rapid consumption of meals might stress the stomach, increasing GERD activity. [via Reuters Health eLine]
