Massage Envy is helping massage become a luxury that many can afford.

John Leonesio, founder and chief executive of Massage Envy, saw the demand for massage therapy working in the health and fitness industry.

“The demand was getting larger, and the customers didn’t have to be sold on the benefits that came along with massage therapy,” Leonesio said. “We saw people making massage as a part of their workout routine.”

Leonesio said he and his partner, Shawn Heycock, a professional massage therapist, heard the same comments about the massage industry. They said customers wanted a good massage from someone with whom they could build a relationship and schedule future appointments, convenient locations and affordable prices.

They found that people were willing to go to some of the local massage colleges to get massages from students because the price was good.

“The price point was what people considered,” Leonesio said. “But in order to provide the service for $30, we need some kind of commitment.”

So Massage Envy adopted the health club membership system, requiring a monthly membership fee.

The $49 monthly membership fee includes one massage every month, and each massage after that is $29.

“Most of the members will come two to three times a month,” Leonesio said.

Massage Envy opened its first location in March of last year and now have six Valley locations and have plans to branch out to other states.

“We have multiple locations around the Valley so customers can literally pop into any location and get a massage,” Leonesio said. “We have lots of therapists, lots of rooms, lots of hours and lots of locations.”

Each of the six Valley locations have about 12 rooms and with the 100 therapists on staff. They can fill about 3,000 time slots each month.
